Consumer Evaluations
There are two serious style flaws in this unit, and GE will not own either of them. 1st, the metal manage on the microwave gets genuinely hot when you have things cooking on the stove, and I mean you-have to have-a-potholder-to-open hot. Secondly, and considerably a great deal more problematic, the touchscreen can't handle heat and/or moisture and shorts out. You would consider an appliance designed to be installed "over the range" may actually be in a position to function in this environment. (It is in fact installed more than the matching GE Cafe gas range, so compatibility should really not be a trouble.)
Our very first touchpad fried in much less than two weeks and the store gave us a replacement microwave devoid of complaint. Had to install it myself -- once more. Then the touchscreen shorted once again a handful of months later, but just after waiting for days for a service call, it started operating again when the tech arrived. He refused to do anything, because it was operating fine at that time. But of course, it has shorted out when once more.
If GE would acknowledge that one thing is wrong in the design and present an upgraded touchpad,that would be fine. But I suspect that they program to preserve replacing the touchpads until we run out of our extended warranty and then we'll be left high and dry.
Do not feel I'll order anything from GE once more.
Purchased this microwave and the matching gas oven during March 2010. Microwave fuse blew out immediately after 5 months. After various calls and appointments, the service man fixed it. Could possibly 2011 (1 month out of warranty) the display pannel (with all of the cooking contols) stopped working! GE has not been helpful yet, but I'll update this evaluation if there are any positive developments. The GE cafe oven has been fine thus far. As other individuals have stated, damn that is 1 hot handel. The microwave was developed and made by brick layers (no offense to masons).
